Walking Portsmouth
(and her Environs)

by AJ Noon

Step into history as you discover the factors that influenced the growth and development of Portsea Island and the surrounding areas. These 32 walks in and around Portsmouth, bring to life the historic, cultural, and environmental value of the area you are traversing.

Each walk details the facilities found along the route and shows how the various paths link up so you can take your own explorations further. Most of the walks are circular, with easy access points for train, bus, and car, and they range in length from 2 to 14 miles. As well as the walks, the book includes fascinating insights into the history of Portsmouth via its landscape, and also directs you to local walking groups, long-distance trails, and tips to make the most of your rambling.

In addition to Portsea Island, the local areas of Gosport, Titchfield, Portsdown Hill, and Farlington Marshes are included to give you a variety of walks to undertake. Should you fancy hopping on the Hovercraft, Walking Portsmouth also includes a bonus walk around the marvellous Isle of Wight.

Exploring Portsmouth Dockyard
by AJ Noon

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard contains an amazing array of ships, buildings, memorials, and more, each with their own history. This book has several sections, the first of which guides you through the publicly accessible areas, giving you the history of each feature. Whether it is the dry docks, the statues, the boathouses, or the memorials, find out what has helped to shape this area.

The second section explains how to get the most out of your visit to see everything the museums, the ships such as HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, and tours have to offer will take you a couple of days if you do everything in detail. It has hints and tips for your visit, accessibility information, and things to consider as the site is still part of the active naval base.

The third section gives you information on the local amenities, such as hotel, parking, and other museums in the area.
Finally, there is a historical timeline for the dockyard and a ship-spotters guide for the currently active Royal Navy ships you may see on your visit, especially if you do the harbour tour.
